Updated Phonic and Sight Word Sequence (Bpsw): We have an older edition, is it necessary to update?

Program updates are often minor, so books less than five years old usually don’t need replacing.

However, for Phonic and Sight Word Sequence books older than 6-15 years, significant changes to the introduction sections may warrant an upgrade.

If schools have a mixture of older (pre-dating 2020) and newer editions of the Phonic and Sight Word Sequence, it is advisable that the older editions are phased out and replaced by the current version for consistency within your school.

Schools may elect to retain the older editions but to pair them with the latest Screening & Tracking Manuals and Teaching Sequence Manuals to maintain program fidelity.

What has PLD Updated?

The latest edition of the Phonic and Sight Word Sequence program has several new and updated inclusions. These updates include significant improvements to instruction and teaching outlines, as well as some planning pages, with a vastly improved visual layout for easier navigation, as outlined in the examples below:

QR codes are also provided, linking directly to manuals and demonstration lessons to support educators with their implementation of PLD, and using the resource.

For consistency, schools are encouraged to upgrade, but trade-in deals are available. Contact our office for more information.

How do I know if I need an upgrade?

All current editions of PLD programs can be viewed online.

Simply select “PREVIEW” to compare your school’s existing program with the latest editions available.

Can I trade-in the old version of the Phonic and Sight Word Sequence book?

Yes, for books older than 5-7 years, PLD provides a 20% discount on the revised version of the resources you would like to trade-in. If your school has editions from 2020 to date, it may not be necessary to update.

Why does PLD Regularly Update Resources?

PLD updates its programs to align with the latest evidence-based research. Literacy research evolves constantly, and we refine our resources to reflect the Science of Reading, ensuring they remain practical and effective. Feedback from schools on implementation also informs updates to content, layouts and strategies. PLD remains committed to providing resources that support educators and students effectively.
