The PHONICS CHECK's alignment to PLD.

Each year the phonic concepts that are included in the 'Phonics Check' will differ slightly as they change the words included in the test each year.

What is important to remember is that this is a pass-or-fail test only. This means students only need to receive a score of 28 or above to pass the test. Students who are keeping up with the teaching sequence manual in Year 1 should be exposed to enough phonic concepts to pass the test.

Further information if requested: Below I have broken down this year's test so you can see how a student will be able to pass the phonics check if taught the phonic concepts covered in the Teaching Sequence Manual from Prep to Year 1 early Term 3. The phonic concepts covered in Prep and Year 1 (Term 1 & 2) prepare students to read 26 items correctly. I have highlighted these in the screenshot below. If we also include the teaching from the first 2 weeks of Term 3 in the Yr 1 Teaching Sequence Manual we can then expect students to receive an additional 2 test items correct adding up to 28 items correct = pass.
