# When do students no longer need decodable reading books? How is this determined?

${color}[#000000](**Knowing when students progress from decodable reading books can be difficult. PLD suggests two options to determine this progression, and recommend that both options be applied in the decision making process.**)

| Option 1: Analyse the Early Reading Screen Results:
* If much of the Early Reading Screen is read accurately (i.e. 95% accuracy) with high levels of rapid whole word reading and minimal decoding, students can progress from decodable books to grphic novels and other rich reading material.
* By the end of Year 1 students should be reading well into Stage 2 (this follows the Teaching Sequence outline).
