# What place does ‘Phonetic Writing‘ (or invented spelling) have in PLD, SSP and Foundation?

| There are many opinions related to Early Literacy and many of which are still drawing from Whole Language and Balanced Literacy Theory. PLD is not aligned with these frameworks but rather with Structured Synthetic Phonics (SSP) and hence will differ from those holding a Balanced Literacy/Whole Language/Play ECE background. 

* The 2024 Term 1 Summary Overview suggests single word CVC reading & spelling. This can be found on Page 5 of the Foundation Teaching Sequence Manual 

* It is in from Term 2 that writing of sentences and multi-sentences commences through Phonic Dictation Writing Tasks. These can be found on page 7, 9 and 11 of the Foundation Teaching Sequence Manual.

| What about Modelled Writing and spelling complex words in SSP?

**Within this SSP approach there is no need for invented or phonetic spelling. **


* SSP advocates for engaging in phonic dictation with the known phonic concepts, therefore you never have to model incorrect spelling. 
* In order to present phonic based sentence and passage rewriting, you will need this text First Writing Activities | Improve Writing Ability With PLD
* It is within the curriculum aspects of your literacy block that you will be challenged by modelling words outside the phonic knowledge of the students (e.g. when writing a narrative etc). This is outside your SSP section of the website and also outside the realm that PLD suggests.
