PLD recommends 3 targeted teaching groups in the Junior Primary. Why?
PLD's recommends teacher's establish 3 targeted teaching groups. Within a 30 minute SSP lesson format, teachers then aim to deliver 3 levels of phonic-based word lists.
Why does PLD NOT recommend 4 - 6 groups of narrow phonic based word lists?
Although some teachers can manage the teaching and delivery of spelling tasks to 4 - 6 lists, rarely will these teachers be able to deliver 4 - 6 phonic dictation passages within the 30 minute SSP session.
PLD advocates for a minimum of 2 days a week of phonic dictation, delivered to the three targeted teaching groups.
After screening students in the Early Years and Foundation, and entering the data into the tracking sheets: PLD recommends merging similar groups to create 3 targeted teaching groups.
What not to do:
Have many, narrow targeted teaching groups, then as a result not schedule the twice weekly phonic dictation tasks.
