# Low-entry Students in Year 1 & 2 Who Are Struggling with Target 1 CVC

|| FAQ: I am a Year 1 or Year 2 teacher and have students unable to spell CVC words. What does PLD recommend?
Here are some tips to cater for students in Year 1 and above who are scoring 0-20% in Target 1 CVC spelling.

|| Tip 1: Get a baseline of skills using the _Difficulty Acquiring Stage 1_  screen on page 30 in the [Year 1 & 2 Screening & Tracking Manual](https://pld-literacy.org/product/year-1-2-screening-tracking-manual/).

Begin with Exercise 1 (pink arrow) and proceed to Exercise 2. Present the subtests (green arrow) within the red box only if students experience difficulty with Exercises 1 & 2. Enter the data into your class tracking sheet under the appropriate columns as shown by the red arrow below.

Referrals to a Speech & Language Pathologist and Occupational Therapist are good starting points.
