Do I need to identify errors and teach to the misconceptions?

For students operating BELOW where they should be...

YES it is very important to identify and target the specific errors they are making.

If students are operating below their peers, identify and target as many of the specific gaps. By attending to the gaps, teachers can aim to move students forward as quickly as possible.

For students who are age-appropriate or advanced

NO this is not necessary.

If students are relatively age-appropriate, work broadly through the provided teaching sequences.

Target phonic concepts at a reading, spelling, vocabulary, writing and morpheme level.

If age-appropriate, there is no need to rush through the stages filling in gaps.

This is outlined in the Year 3, 4, 5 & 6 Teaching Sequence Manual on page 9.
